The pluralization of epistemologies in the academic environment is neither a luxury nor a fad. It is an ethical, political, and scientific necessity. Academic journals that open themselves up to listening to the margins are not only innovating their formatsthey are expanding the very limits of knowledge.

For Portuguese philosopher Boaventura de Sousa Santos, we need an “ecology of knowledge,” where different forms of knowledge coexist, dialogue, and strengthen each other.

Therefore, promoting the presence of indigenous, quilombola, and peripheral voices in the scientific circuit is not only democratizing science, but making it more truthful, more rooted, and, above all, more just.

When science is separated from its social function, it becomes a technology of power: it selects what deserves to be studied, who can be an author, and what can be recognized as valid. In this scenario, it is urgent to think of ways to subvert this logic and scientific journals can (and should) be privileged spaces for this.
